Otterbox Defender Series Heavy Duty Belt Clip Now Available

Abril 27th, 2009 No Comments

OtterBox Heavy Duty Belt Clip

One of the most frequently asked questions in the forums from public safety workers is what kind of holster can they use on their utility belts for their prized BlackBerry. OtterBox has always been what I have suggested, but the down side was that it did not fit on the utility belts securely.

When I went to CES in January, I stopped by the OtterBox booth and spoke with them about this and they told me they were working on a solution that would be available soon. I'm happy to say OtterBox Defender series heavy duty belt clip have finally arrived to ShopCrackBerry.com! The heavy duty belt clip has been designed to work on utility belts up to 2.25″ wide.

They are currently designed for the Bold, 8800, Pearl, 8350i, Curve and 8700 series. That pretty much covers any BlackBerry currently used today (no Storm version yet). As of right now, they are sold as a stand alone item for $14.95, so you must already own an OtterBox Defender Series case, or buy one in conjunction with the heavy duty holster. You can follow the links below for more information and to order. I'll have a full review coming soon.

Camera-less 8350i Now Available From Sprint!

Nextel Offers Up Cameraless 8350i!

A lot of folks were wondering if we had seen the end of camera-less BlackBerry devices, and the answer to that question is now a definite NO. After much speculation, the BlackBerry Curve 8350i has now arrived on Nextel in its camera-less form. The same specs apply to this 8350i as the original aside from the obvious missing camera, so that of course means WiFi and all the PTT you can handle, and while this device is clearly made for Enterprise/Business customers I have to wonder how many businesses will be adding this BlackBerry to their line up. Let's just hope Nextel/Sprint and RIM have the OS issues cleaned up by now. If ya need a camera-less BlackBerry this one will set ya back $149.99 after rebates with a new 2/year contract.

Leaked: BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software 5.0

BlackBerry Desktop Manager Software 5.0

With BlackBerry 5.0 device software for the BlackBerry Bold and BlackBerry Curve 8900 leaking onto the interwebs this week, it only makes sense that Destop Manager 5.0 software would follow suit. Big thanks goes out to sliderz once again for sending us in the link.

I'm not sure how close this software is to being in final form considering it hasn't been officially released by RIM, but it looks to be the same as in the Desktop Manager 5.0 preview we brought you a couple weeks back. After unzipping the file and installing on my PC, the software seems to be working fine and loaded up 5.0.0.90 onto my Curve 8900 without issue. But as usual with this kind of thing, ** Install and Use at Own Risk **

BlackBerry Curve 8900 OS 5.0.0.90 Found Online!

What a week for BlackBerry OS 5.0. On Monday we brought you a video sneak peak of 5.0 (app version 5.0.0.83) running on a BlackBerry Curve 8900. A few days later, OS 5.0 leaks for the BlackBerry Bold 9000 (Michael just gave it a nice screen cap walk through). Now OS 5.0.0.90 has been found online for the BlackBerry Curve 8900 (big thanks to sliderz for sending in the link). It's going to be nice to see 5.0 get rolled out.

App World First Impressions

Abril 4th, 2009 No Comments

Spent most of this week in Las Vegas at CTIA, so we did not have much time to post here on the blog but we’ll try to cull through all the news and report on some interesting topics.

On Wednesday, RIM (NASDAQ: RIMM) officially unveiled BlackBerry App World, which is RIM’s response to Apple’s AppStore. The new on-device application storefront offers a broad selection of personal and business applications for BlackBerry smartphones.

You can read about compatible devices from our previous post from last month.

I downloaded the store to my Blackberry Curve and the process was dead simple. The store downloaded into my applications folder and after opening has a nice, simple user interface.

The store had 11 featured titles with a mix of free (Facebook) and paid applications (Guitar Hero – $11.99).

There is also a button for categories, Top Downloads, Search and an area called “My World” which presumably shows you which apps you have downloaded.

The store features 13 categories:

-Entertainment
-Games
-Maps and Navigation
-Music and Video
-News and Weather
-Personal Health and Wellness
-Personal Finance and Banking
-Productivity and Utilities
-Professional and Business
-Reference and eBooks
-Social Networking and Sharing
-Sports and Recreation
-Travel

I saw one press release that claimed the store would offer over 1,000 apps, but a quick glance from my phone showed about 500 apps with roughly half (227) being games.

I haven’t gone through the purchase process yet but I did download the free Facebook app to my phone and it worked flawlessly.

My initial impression is that the store is well done. It looks good and worked great. I was somewhat surprised that it downloaded into my application folder vs. setting up a new icon directly on my phones “desktop”. I’m sure future versions will be pre-loaded onto devices and they will get that important realestate location.

To try it out on your Blackberry phone, simply go to: www.blackberry.com/appworld/download from your device.

Blackberry App World Info Part I

Marzo 31st, 2009 No Comments

Last week Research In Motion’s BlackBerry App World opened to developers, and with the opening came more information of how the application storefront will work.

We will be providing some analysis of the latest OEM owned and operated App Store in a series of posts as we read through the developer agreement, rules of engagement, etc.

So, first things first.

1. When will App World be available?

They have not released specific dates but you can sign up on their website here to get notified when the store is live.

2. What devices will be supported?

BlackBerry App World works with compatible BlackBerry smartphones running OS version 4.2.0 or higher and is supported on the following devices:

  • BlackBerry Bold 9000 smartphone
  • BlackBerry Storm smartphone
  • BlackBerry Pearl Flip Series
  • BlackBerry Curve 8300 Series
  • BlackBerry Curve 8900 smartphone
  • BlackBerry 8800 Series
  • BlackBerry Pearl Series

3. Where will BlackBerry App World be available?

BlackBerry App World will launch in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom.

No word yet on how someone with a compatible device will get access to App World but inside sources have told me that it will be available as an over-the-air download to your device and ultimately will come pre-loaded on newer devices. My assumption is that there will also be a desktop accessible storefront (similar to iTunes) but no definitive word on that either.

In the next post we will look at the pricing model, revenue share to developers and billing options for consumers and developers.
