iPhone Game Review – Parachute Panic
This fun casual game requires you to successfully land a host of parachutists into passing boats while trying to avoid obstacles such as helicopters, U.F.O´s, sharks and thunder clouds. The game play is reminiscent of the vintage Nintendo Game & Watch handheld parachute game that I used to love to play back in the early 80’s. The game has very cool hand drawn graphics, smooth animations, catchy music and awesome sound effects. The game has been getting good reviews in the App Store and I have to agree – it is very well done and lots of fun. Check out a video of the game here. The only slightly negative comment I will make is that this game is not easy. It takes a little while to get used to the controls and even after mastering the techniques, the action picks up fast and furious. My 7 year old lost interest pretty quickly as it was too hard, but personally, I love the game, and for a buck it’s well worth it. Click here to get it now.
iPhone Game Review – Bed Bugs
Well, I may have found one tonight in Bed Bugs. Developed by Igloo Games Bed Bugs is highly addictive and very fun. You play the role of a sleepwalker who climbs out of bed and is bombarded by all different types of Bed Bugs that are doing their best to wake him up. At each level (I made it through 9) a new Bed Bug is introduced and each of them have to be handled differently. Some you can’t touch. Others you have to touch multiple times and in the latest level, some you touch once but you better not touch them again. The game starts out pretty easy but gets progressively more difficult as the new Bed Bugs get introduced and you have to keep your fingers moving to keep your Sleepwalker asleep. This is a game that is simply perfect for the iPhone and iPod touch and everything about the game is done extremely well: the sound, the graphics, the controls and the game concept are fantastic. This is Igloo’s second iPhone game. Dizzy Bee was the first and although I have personally not played it, it has gotten tremendous reviews so it’s no surprise that these guys have nailed it again with Bed Bugs. This is a game for all ages and I’m excited to show my kids this one as well. It is currently selling for $1.99 in iTunes and I highly recommend downloading it now.
iPhone Game Review – iZombie Death March
I downloaded the game last night and had a great time killing lots and lots of Zombies. The game is very straight forward – you play as a lone gunman surrounded by Zombies who come at you from every angle. Simply touch the screen where you want to shoot and “pow!” the Zombies go down. There are 6 missions or chapters to choose from: 1. Point Blank And in each chapter you can choose from four different difficulty levels: Easy, Normal, Death Wish or Nightmare. As the descriptions indicate, the chapters get increasingly more difficult. I played all 6 chapters and mixed in varying difficulty levels. My personal favorite (pictured) is Runaway where you are in the back of a pick-up truck gunning down Zombies while trying to drive away from some crazy monster chasing you down the highway. The game is also made more interesting with the clever storyline that is displayed between chapters. There are some great quotes in here including my favorite: There must be something weird going on in the Zombie space because between this game and Popcap’s new PC game “Plants vs Zombies” I’ve been spending too much time killing zombies, but boy, is it fun. SonicBoom is offering iZombie Death March for an introductory price of $1.99 through iTunes. The game is very well done and it’s a fun diversion for 5 minutes or longer. I highly recommend downloading this title and don’t be surprised if you find yourself groaning BRAAAAAAINS!! every now and again after playing it.
iPhone Game Review – Glyder
Glu Mobile Inc. (Nasdaq:GLUU), today announced the launch of Glyder on the Apple App Store. Glyder is an original Glu title for iPhone and iPod touch where players take control of a hang glider as a pilot named Eryn, as she soars through beautiful 3D environments, unlocking new lands and finding her way home. I downloaded the game to my iPhone and spent a solid 30 minutes playing the game tonight (after watching the mildly interesting NCAA Basketball Championship game). The game is very simple – you glide Eryn through the sky, trying to collect various crystals along the way in order to unlock new worlds. There are two main things you need to worry about – your speed and your altitude. The game is built on the accelerometer so you tilt your device up or down to maneuver Eryn through the sky. The graphics are really well done and as some other reviewers have noted, the game is low stress. No guns, or shooting or bad guys trying to attack you. You simply need to avoid crashing into the mountains and water while looking for crystals. The controls take very little time to get used to which is nice. (As a comparison, I had a tough time getting used to the controls on the very popular Cro-Mag Rally). Other features of the game include:
If you like flying games, I highly recommend downloading this title. Glyder is now available worldwide for an introductory price of $1.99 from Apple’s App Store.
iPhone Game Review – MemoryMania
Here’s a fun game to download to your iPhone or iPod touch if you have young children – MemoryMania. Based on the traditional memory game that we all played as kids, MemoryMania combines two different games – the classic memory match where you have a set of cards and you turn over 2 at a time to try to clear the board as fast as possible and a hide-and-seek game where you first look at a set of cards and then they all get turned over and you are presented one card and you try to remember where it is in the set. Pretty basic game mechanism, and I’m sure there are lots of other memory-type games on the App Store. What makes MemoryMania fun is that there are 20 different sets of cards to choose from (various animals, flags, people, aliens, etc.) so you’re not going to get bored quickly. In addition, there are 3 different levels of difficulty based on the players skill level. For beginners, there are 12 cards and the highest level has 30 cards so as the description says “a game for kids between the ages of 3 and 103″. The game has great graphics and sound and the kids I’ve shown it to over the last few days have liked it a lot. Give it a look on the AppStore if you’re looking for a fun (and educational) game.
iPhone Game Review – the VOID
So I was a little concerned when I downloaded The VOID from Beautiful Pixel. First of all, the game is large (52MB) so it was taking awhile to download which usually isn’t the case. Secondly, there is a fair amount of rich graphics and things to figure out before you even get started. You have to choose your ship, weapons, and equipment and you only have a certain amount of money to start, so you have to figure out how much things cost, etc. The game is marketed as a “space based role playing game” and by looking at the screenshots and video, my initial reaction was that VOID looked like a suped-up version of Asteroids. (Note: I was never very good at Asteroids and these types of games in general are not my favorite.) Well, after struggling a bit at the start to learn the controls and objectives, I found myself getting sucked in to a very fun and sophisticated game. Per the developer’s blog, these guys spent over 6 months developing this game, and it shows. Tons of levels, and options that would provide a hardcare iPhone gamer with literally hours of entertainment. Personally, I made it through a few levels and had to put it down but I’m sure I’ll be back at it later. The game is selling on iTunes for $4.99 which is on the higher end of pricing in the AppStore but there is way more than $5 worth of value here. If you like these types of games, go buy it.
